Egirl: Getting Started

To begin, make sure you've set up your VR hardware and completed all of the steps to calibrate it for your space.

Oculus Rift

If you have an Oculus Rift, make sure that you have installed the Oculus app and set up your space. To allow Egirl to use the Oculus Rift headset, you will need to enable unknown sources in your Oculus settings (Oculus does not allow adult-oriented apps in its store). To enable unknown sources:

  1. Start from the Oculus App on your computer, select the gear icon on the upper right.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select General from the menu on the left.
  4. Locate the Unknown Sources section.
  5. Select the toggle to enable this feature.

Each time you run Egirl, you'll need to open the Oculus desktop app first. If the Egirl loader says "no vr device detected", this indicates that the Oculus desktop app is not running or the Oculus Rift is not plugged in / turned on. If this occurs, please make sure the app is running, the Rift is plugged in and active, and restart Egirl.

HTC Vive / Steam VR

If you have a Vive VR system, first install the Steam desktop app. Next run the Steam VR setup, or follow the instructions that came with your HTC Vive system. Steam VR will guide you through the room setup, and familiarize you with the controllers and headset. Once you have done this, make sure that Steam VR is running before running Egirl. If the Egirl loader says "no vr device detected", please make sure that Steam VR is running and it shows that your Vive system is active before running Egirl.

Install and Run Egirl

Dowload the Egirl installer from the Egirl website. Please do not trust other sources as they may contain malware or viruses. After installing Egirl, run it and the Egirl loader window will show up. Here you have a few options. If you have a VR headset plugged in and active, text will display indicating the VR device is ready to use. Click "Play VR" button and put on your VR headset. If you don't have a VR device, or want to play on your computer monitor, click the "Play" button.

Activate Egirl

Once you have purchased Egirl VR from the Egirl website, you can activate the Egirl VR app to gain full access. From the Egirl VR loader screen, click the activate button. Enter in your email address and password that you used when registering on the Egirl website. Make sure your interenet connection is turned on, and click the activate button.

Playing Egirl

You will start in the main level, which shows you the available sessions to choose from. You can highlight a level using the D-pad on your gamepad controller, the HTC Vive controller d-pad buttons, or the arrow keys on the keyboard. Once the level is highlighted, select it with gamepad A button, HTC Vive trigger, or the keyboard Enter key. Please see the controls page for full details on different input devices.

Moving Around

All Egirl sessions are viewed as a first person experience. You can move around using standard first-person game controls on any supported input device.

Egirl is a seated VR experience. This means it is intended that you move and navigate through the scene using the input device, and you can also look around and move your head. Think of it as your controller moves your body in the scene, and your viewpoint is controlled by you moving your head (looking around and moving your head side to side, forward and back.)

You're going to want to get the best view possible in the sessions, and to do so you can not only "walk" around using the controller. You can also change your height. As the egirl changes her position, you may find that you aren't close enough in height to have a good view. To change your height, press and hold the height-higher or height-lower button. These are the rear left/right triggers on the gamepad, or the grip buttons on the HTC Vive controller. On the keyboard it is page-up and page-down.

You can go as low as the floor for a great upward view, and... the sky's the limit!

Dialog and Answering Questions

The egirl will ask you various questions throughout the sessions, and your answers dictate the course of action and conversation. Questions and answers will appear in a 3d user interface floating near the egirl. You can select an answer by using the UI navigation buttons (d-pad or arrow keys) and the select button (gamepad A button or Vive trigger).

Menu and Exit

You can exit the session at any time by pressing the Egirl menu button. This is the gamepad X button (or the menu button on XBox One controller), the Vive controller upper menu button, or the keyboard escape key.

Getting lost in VR

Sometimes either navigation or your VR device's tracking will make you feel like you're pointed in the wrong direction. you can reset your view to the direction you are currently facing using the Reset VR View button. This is gamepad right-back button, or the keyboard R key.

Monitoring Performance

In VR, it's important that you get a high frame rate. 90fps or more is good and will help prevent motion sickness. At any time you can enable the FPS tab, which will show the frames per second you are acheiving on your specific hardware. To show/hide the FPS tab, use the gamepad left-back button, or the keyboard P key.

If you're getting less than 90fps in VR mode for HTC Vive for Oculus Rift, you can increase frame rate by:

  • decreasing graphics level in the loader screen. Decrease one level at a time to maximize graphics quality
  • upgrade your graphics card (GPU). A Geforce GTX 1060 should run 90fps or better using Ultra graphics level setting.
